Ranking Member Scott Statement on June Jobs Report
WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 206,000 jobs in June, and the unemployment rate ticked up slightly from 4.0 to 4.1 percent. The economy, under President Biden, has created the most jobs in a single presidential term. The previous record was under President Clinton, at 11.6 million jobs. In stark contrast, Trump presided over the worst labor market in modern U.S. history.
“Today’s jobs report marks another significant milestone in our nation’s economic recovery. Since President Biden took office, the economy has added a total of 15.7 million jobs. And thanks to President Biden and Congressional Democrats, last month marked over one million pensions saved for hard-working Americans.
"When President Biden took office, the multiemployer pension system was on the brink of collapse. Hard-working Americans who earned their pensions in demanding industries, such as truck driving and construction, were at risk of losing everything through no fault of their own. And businesses participating in multiemployer plans were also at risk of financial ruin.
“In the American Rescue Plan Act, Congressional Democrats and President Biden delivered a historic victory for these workers, retirees, and businesses. The American Rescue Plan Act established a special financial assistance program to protect Americans’ retirement security and save tens of thousands of businesses. And last month, marked over one million pensions saved.
“The strides we have made under the Biden-Harris Administration serve as a testament to the power of economic policies that put workers and their families first. As we move forward, it is crucial that we build on this progress and continue to prioritize investments that support working families and strengthen our economy from the bottom up and the middle out.”
